What happens
We will start with an initial consultation period, during which we will find out more about you as a person, your individual needs and goals, any relevant experiences or worries that you may have along with any necessary medical or personal history relevant to the therapy. In return, we will answer any questions you may have and ensure you feel comfortable to move forward with the therapy.
Only if we are both agreed that Hypnotherapy is right for you will we progress to offer you treatment, at which point it will be totally clear as to the likely number of sessions required and what form this might take. We will then take a full case history, to understand more about your particular case and what treatments you may have already tried. We will want to understand what obstacles you may have already encountered in trying to overcome the problems previously and look at possible strategies for you in achieving your goal.
When you are ready, the therapist will guide you into a state of hypnotic relaxation using whichever techniques are most appropriate for you. Even though many people associate pocket watches with Hypnotherapy, they aren't really used much. Similarly staring into the therapist’s eyes is only one of very many induction techniques that could be used and is not actually very likely.
Once an appropriate degree of relaxation has been reached, we can use a variety of therapeutic techniques to help you achieve your goals. Analytical therapy can be used as a technique of finding out from the unconscious mind what is causing the problem. Suggestion therapy, allows simple suggestions to be made to the unconscious mind as to how you can think, feel and behave in order to resolve the problem and regression techniques are a way of accessing past memories, which may be the original cause of the problems bothering you in the present.
Post-hypnotic and confidence boosting suggestions may also be given to help you if appropriate. We may also teach you self-hypnosis techniques that you can practice at home.
Finally we will bring you out of trance, and may give you some 'homework', such as periods of self-hypnosis or a task to complete.
Most people will remain completely aware throughout, but should experience a pleasant feeling of mental and physical relaxation or calmness. Everybody is a unique individual and may describe the experience differently, however it is always a relaxing and pleasant experience.
You would most likely be able to open your eyes and leave the trance state at anytime you choose (although that would not necessarily be desirable in achieving the goals). In fact many people say that they experience a heightened state of awareness during Hypnosis.
You will always be in complete control throughout and can never be made to accept suggestions that are not appropriate or desirable to you. |
